Structural Steel & Rebar

Steel Columns

Columns are vertical structures that support beams and slabs, playing a crucial role in a building’s stability and strength. They are the frameworks — also referred to as pillars — that hold our structures aloft, transferring loads from roofs and floors down through the frame and into the foundations. Because a column failure affects everything it carries, column material is specified, certified and inspected with particular care.

Types of steel columns

  • Universal columns (UC / H-sections) — the workhorse of multi-storey frames, with wide flanges giving strong performance in both axes
  • Hollow section columns — square, rectangular or circular hollow sections for architectural and high-torsion applications
  • Fabricated box and plate columns — welded from plate where rolled sections are not large enough
  • Compound columns — rolled sections combined with plates for heavy industrial loads

Applications

Steel columns carry high-rise and low-rise building frames, industrial plants and pipe racks, warehouses and pre-engineered buildings, bridges, and equipment support structures across the energy and mining sectors.
